在1984年10月于波士顿举行的美国物理学会等离子体分会上,以丹·马修斯为首的劳伦斯利物莫尔实验室的一个研究小组宣布,他们研制成功了世界上第一台软X 射线激光器。他们对一百多次的试验发射进行了广泛的测量,其结果表明,激光器在20nm 附近放出的两条谱线不仅在强度上比瞬时发射的要强近700倍,而且其行为也具有激光器的特征。
